Sports have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I am fortunate to have had many amazing experiences as an athlete, coach, professor, and now a developer of coaches, athletes, and sports professionals.
In my full-time position, I am a Professor and Director of FSU COACH: Interdisciplinary Center for Athletic Coaching at Florida State University. My educational training spans four countries, having acquired a Bachelor's in Sports Science, Master's in Sport & Exercise Psychology, Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Master's in Teaching), Master's in Kinesiology, and Doctorate in Physical Education. I have written extensively on sports performance topics, including over 125 peer-reviewed articles and several books. I have also made over 100 presentations around the world on sports performance topics. I have also been inducted as a fellow in the hall of fame for two kinesiology organizations.
My most recent books include Case Studies in Coaching Ethics, Reach Every Athlete: A Guide to Coaching Athletes with Hidden Disabilities and Conditions and Coaching for Sports Performance. Click here for a list of my published books. My work also has been featured in a variety of TV, radio, newsprint, and online sources including CNN, NPR Morning Edition, Chicago Tribune, and many others.
As an educator and researcher, I have worked with many different groups and individuals within sports. These include local, national, and international level organizations and sports administrators. Examples include the Milwaukee Bucks, NCAA, Women's Football Alliance, National Collegiate Equestrian Association, National Wrestling Hall of Fame, National Volleyball Coaches Association, and the International Racquetball Federation, to name a few. I have also worked with many other coaches and sports administrators, from local volunteers to Olympic-level professionals.
I am a firm believer in practicing what I preach; therefore, I have maintained an active athletic and coaching career. While I could never claim to have been a professional athlete, I have experienced athletic success in tennis, track and field, volleyball, soccer, martial arts, racquetball, squash 57, and pickleball. I have been fortunate to have represented both my native birthplace England as well as USA, albeit at the amateur level. Most recently, I have served as the Head Coach of the USA Racquetball Junior National Team.
I have also continued to coach throughout my career, working privately with athletes and coaches in need of support. As a former physical education teacher and professor, I place "teaching" as paramount within my coaching philosophy, and have worked with amateur and professional athletes and coaches from many different countries. Few things give me greater pleasure than seeing my clients achieve success in their sport and as individuals.
Giving back to sports is also important to me. Over the past two decades, I have served on a variety of national and international organizations, including serving as an anti-doping administrator for five years. I currently volunteer on the Executive Board and as an analyst and commentator for the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour.
