DOES LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT DESIGNED IN BUSINESS MAKE SENSE FOR SPORTS?
Have you ever been told that leadership starts at the top? It's true. But also true is that leadership, good or bad, permeates every part of a sports organization, including the players, coaches, staff, management, and ownership. Good leaders can build an organization and bad ones can tear it down. What kind of leader are you? Can you get better? The answer is always yes.
I'm not sure it's possible to count the number of books, articles, blogs, and talks on leadership. Many have a theory or secret that will lead to leadership success. Unfortunately, most of these are situation specific and may not even work outside of the example where it was successful.
Much of the leadership literature comes from the world of business. Sports and the sports industry, while similar to a business model, are very different. As a consequence, what we may have learned from leaders in the business world may not translate to the world of sports. Why, then, are we not learning from those who have succeeded in our own environment?

HOW SPC DEVELOPS LEADERS
Using research and models of success that primarily come from the world of sports, I offer leaders in sports or those wishing to become leaders in sports a different perspective of leadership. I ask and then offer answers to the following:
What can we learn from successful team captains, coaches, athletic directors and others leading the way in sports?
What steps are needed to replicate their success?
Where have leaders failed in sports? How can we learn from their mistakes?
How has leadership changed as sports continue to change?
